Buy Me Some Peanuts And Cra-cker Jacks

Ah, Baseball.  It’s good to have you back.  Is there anything more ‘American’ than baseball?  I love many different sports, but no others give me the range of emotions that baseball does.  Being a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, I tend to have more frustration than happiness between the months of April to October.  Despite this, I have never been ashamed to be a Cubs fan.

Whether they happen to be on pace to win 60 games or 90 games, I’ve always said I am a Cubs fan, loud and proud.  A lot of people like to call the Cubs “lovable losers”.  I personally think that’s kinda lame, because no one loves to root for a loser.  People of Chicago, and all over the country for that matter, love to root for the Cubs DESPITE the fact that they happen to lose often.  Year in and year out, the Cubs have the best attendance in the major leagues, both home and away.  At away games, it is not uncommon for half of the park to be filled with Cubs fans.  This isn’t because they have won 26 World Championships or because they consistently make the playoffs, like the Yankees or the Red Sox.  There are so many Cubs fans out there because its frickin’ fun to like the Cubs.  That’s the best part of being a fan: no matter how good or bad they are, there’s always a party going on.  When someone like my sister, who doesn’t know much about baseball, who couldn’t explain what a can of corn or a frozen rope is, looks forward to going to Cubs games and takes days off of work to do so, there must be something more there than a guy hitting a ball with a stick.

As the season gets under way, I can only hope that the Cubs will hit with the power their lineup could and should provide, that Lou figures out the pitching rotation, that Kerry Wood settles into his role as a closer, and most importantly, that Henry Blanco’s picture is shown as much as possible on game telecasts.  While these things are uncertain, there is one thing that I and all Cubs fans are sure of: on those hot summer days, whether at glorious Wrigley Field or just sitting with my buddies watching the game on TV, I know I’ll be having a good time.
