The City That Never Sleeps

Ah, New York.  Although the feeling of not wanting to leave a nice vacation, or feeling like you want to stay just a few more days is common, I tend to feel it a little bit more than most people.  This trip to New York City was no different.  Although the purpose of the trip was to attend a game at Yankee Stadium one last time, I also got to see some parts of the city that I didn’t remember (and didn’t appreciate) from my last trip to the city in the summer of 2004

New York, New York

On Tuesday, I will be flying to New York City with my Dad and cousin Peter, and will later meet my Uncle Mark from Pittsburgh.  Our purpose for the trip, besides just getting away, is to see Yankee Stadium one last time before they tear it down at the end of this season.  We will also be attending a New York Mets game, so I will get to see Shea Stadium for the first (and last) time as well.

I traveled to New York City in June of 2003 with my Dad and sister and was lucky enough to see a Yankee game then.  Although I am not a fan of the Yankees, it was a very cool experience.  The city itself is unique.  Despite Chicago’s large size, it pales in comparison to the size of NYC.  Much like Chicago, however, you can feel the city’s history and diversity when you walk through the streets.

I’ll try to take some good pictures with my iPhone and post them here.  Until then, I hope everyone has a good week.

What A Country!

I’ve been very busy the past week. The Cubs DOMINATED the White Sox (I would like to say some things about the Cubs, but as my dad often reminds me, it’s only June, and oh yeah, it’s still the Cubs……….be calm…….). On Wednesday, I flew to Charlotte, North Carolina to I visit my Uncle John and his fiancé Christy.  I helped them with various jobs around their new house.  On the last night, my uncle, who is an architect, took me to see this multi-piece, rotating sculpture:

This structure is much more interesting than it seems in this blurry picture.  The story told to me about said sculpture included my uncle’s firm, a wealthy Count from Germany, an industrial park, a classic rock band from the Czech Republic, and a world renowned-sculptor; bizarre, but very cool.  Charlotte is a very nice, warm city that seems almost brand new with all of the recent development.  I had a great time.

On the plane home, I had a chance to finish Big Russ & Me, by Tim Russert.  I gave the book to my dad on Father’s Day, just 2 days after the passing of the author.  I not only recommend, but BEG all sons, and fathers alike, to read this book.  It is unfortunate that I have become such a big fan of Tim Russert only after his passing.  Yes, this all may sound corny, but I wish I would have followed him more when he was here.  He seemed like a great person.

On a lighter note, I worked for a full day for the first time today.  Painting houses is very difficult work.  I, however, have nothing to complain about.  Big Russ, and millions of fathers like him, worked two jobs for thirty years.  He did what he had to do to support his family and give them a life better than his own.  If doing some hard work for a few months is the worst thing in my life, then I’ve got it made.

PS.  Uncle John, great purchase!  What a fun car.
