If you read my blog, you know I love movies. In the past 2 years I have seen more movies than I had in the previous 19 years of my life combined. There are many movies released in the past decade that I think highly of. Here they are, by year.
2000
Gladiator – My most favorite movie.
Almost Famous – Describes music and what it means in the most perfect way.
Remember The Titans
2001
Band Of Brothers – Although technically a mini-series, this was more like a 10 hour movie. Amazing in every sense of the word. I wish more people of my generation would see this and understand the sacrifices made by those of “the greatest generation”. The first two episodes aired September 9, 2001. Because of this, no one watched the rest. A bit of a shame, considering it is an achievement.
Ocean’s Eleven
2002
Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers – Probably my favorite of the trilogy.
2003
Old School – The most quoted movie amongst my friends.
2004
The Aviator – Underrated movie. Three of my favorite people in movies (Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann and Leonardo DiCaprio) all together.
2005
Batman Begins – Superhero movies are allowed to be good!
2006
The Departed
2007
Superbad – This movie, about two high school seniors struggling with the idea of leaving for college, came out the summer between my senior year of high school and college. Maybe it was the timing, but this movie struck a very loud chord with me.
American Gangster
2008
The Dark Knight – See my review here.
Slumdog Millionaire – I don’t understand how one could see this movie and not love it.
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button – Although I understand some of the criticism, I loved this movie. There’s a short point in the film where Benjamin Button and his wife are the same age. 10 minutes of movie bliss.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Funny movies can be good, too!
WALL-E – The third act lacks the magic of the first two, but a wonderful movie none-the-less.
2009 (I have yet to see many of the movies being considered for awards, so this year is incomplete)
Avatar – You need to see this movie in a movie theater. You need to see this movie in 3D. You need to do this now. This movie is entirely the vision of James Cameron. The visuals are the best to ever be put on film. Period.
Up In The Air – Poignant for today’s society.
By The People: The Election Of Barack Obama – Although it is a documentary, I felt compelled to include it in the list because everyone should see this. A fascinating look from the beginning of 2007 all the way up to the Obama family celebrating in their hotel room the night of the election.
